DivX 6 for Mac for Intel/PPC (Universal Binary) – Beta 2r3

MacIntel CodecWell, we Mac guys here at DivX are again poking are heads up from our dark development dungeon and braving the bright light of day just long enough to set free our Beta 2 of DivX 6 for Mac for Intel! “Fly! Be free! Find lots of happy homes on iMacs and MacBook Pros!” DivX 6 for Mac for Intel is a fully-featured version of DivX 6 for Mac, cross-compiled so it will work seamlessly on PowerPC as well as Intel Macintoshes. It is time-limited, but at the same time it has no trial/registration/purchase mumbo-jumbo to deal with.

Key Fixes All you Front Row folk can now rest easy as the Beta 1 crash that occurred at times with certain types of AVI files is now fixed! So, pull out your remote, lay back and enjoy your DivX movies in full glory on your Front Row enabled Macs! A few other improvements and fixes have also been addressed in this release. Witty Repartee So, our low-level Mac codec guru guy, David, proposed some witty things to say about this release. Since he is indispensable as key optimizer, eker out of every bit of performance, migrator from PPC to Intel and other such Mac development goodness, I was only too happy to give him his day in the sun. Um … only what he wrote makes no sense to me! Maybe that’s because those uber-geek, low-level guys are steeped in such esoteric math and Escher-like logic that their style of humor is inaccessible to the rest of us? I don’t know but be sure not to tell him of this post otherwise I’ll lose all credibility and respect as team lead! Plus, I could never, ever tell him that I never have the faintest idea what he’s talking about! I just nod my head and say, “make it so!” But of course, it may be my own fault I can’t keep up with him – that metal plate lodged in my head from an unfortunate exploding original Newton MessagePad has caused me more grief than you can imagine. I have difficulty reading people’s handwriting and have to carry a special FAA explanatory card every time I fly. So, I leave it to you to let us know who is more out to lunch: David or me! Following is David’s blurb. Read it and then let us know what you think: - Does David make sense (and I should reboot the Newton lodged in my head)? A Word from David A lot of you asked nicely, many of you constructively criticized, some complained ... and a couple of you pretty much just whined! Well, unlike your significant other (he or she doesn't love you like we do), we listened! Newness in this release: DivX Encoder Component and Converter
  • DivX Encoder component and Converter now offer 337% more “unisex cowbell” (Cow-ish for universal binary)
  • Fixed a bug that caused problems encoding audio from mono sources
  • Fixed bugs in stomachs #1 and #2 for improved video digestion
DivX Converter
  • Settings window appears while using custom profile (as originally intended!)
DivX Decoder
  • 69% less crashability with the “can’t touch this” AVI’s
  • Fixed bug with G3 crashing (for that one guy that had the issue with the DivX Player Beta 2)
  • Fixed audio bug with “DivX 4.1.2” video (ERp! DivX 4.1.2 didn’t have B-frames, w00t!)
  • Most likely resolved conflict with Flip4Mac (not certain, we don’t have content to reproduce it)
* Please note (before complaining ;): In order for Front Row to load the latest and greatest DivX component, you must first log out and then log back in again. (If you don’t do this and Front Row crashes ... you probably stopped reading this post already, for shame.) ** Please also note: The AC-3 Unibin out there is known to crash Front Row on Intel, hence the other 31% *** Also, also note: The DivX Converter shows up as “PowerPC only." For those who were early

For those who were early implementors of the Divx Web Player, like myself, and want to use Divx as their Video player of choice for their own web sites, you might have noticed a drastic change of strategy.
For one thing, all references are made only to Stage 6, and Divx has stopped promoting the Web Player as the vehicle for streaming Video from web sites.
There have been several upgrades/enhancements in the Divx Software bundle, Except for the Divx Web Player Web Player version 3.1 is still included, as all of the other Divx products have been upgraded several times.

Just look at the comment about Beta 2, "Once again, grab Beta 2, install it and head over to Stage6 for some testing." Just Stage 6.

The Web Player has become much less reliable than the early versions of the Web Player, to the point that earlier Divx videos posted on web sites, that used to work, no longer work, or work occasionally.

Questions about streaming video aren't answered anymore from the Divx support forum or from email or phone tech support. Heck the Divx Web Player doesn't even have its own category on the Divx Support Forum.
Divx support told me flat out and more than once, that they know that the Web Player doesn't work and have no idea when it will be fixed.

When streaming video is referred to by Divx, since 1.3x came out, has only been about usage with Stage6 stored Divx files.

This is my opinion,
I think Divx has abandon the Divx Web Player altogether as a solution for streaming video except for Stage6 stored videos.

Instead of the Divx Web Player product development, I believe that Divx is now focused on a new product that doesn't have much in the way of details yet, DivX Connected.

It just doesn't make sense for Divx to leave the major gap of not having a stable and reliable streaming Video solution. Then when I saw the "teaser" about Divx Connected, it now makes sense to me.
I think it is a marketing decision, that certainly I am in no position to judge.

Anyone's thoughts ??
