Converter Settings

While not for everyone, I use Dr. DivX for conversions because it affords me the most amount of control and it uses the excellent DivX Pro encoder. There are many other tools, some free, usually based on FFMPEG or Mencoder. I find these are not as fast or as good as the DivX Pro codec. If you do a lot of encoding, the $20 cost of the Pro codec is well worth it.

The settings you use are a personal trade off between how fast your computer is, how fast your phone is, and how much storage your phone has. I have a very fast computer so I turn on all the options and use the "insane quality" setting for everything. I usually encode 320x240 pixels at 300 kbps video and 128 kbps stereo audio. The resulting files are about 3 MB / minute and play pretty well with DivX Mobile Player on phones with 200+ MHz processors. There are usually some visible artifacts, but I find them acceptable.

By default, the "Mobile" profile on DivX Converter encodes at 600 kbps video which eliminates almost all artifacts but requires a very fast phone and takes twice the storage.

thanks for the reply. i have a nokia 6120c and i have divx mobile converter. does the nokia 6120c support video at 600kbps?

also i can't see a setting for changeing fps in divx mobile converter, will this affect my the video playback in the phone? most of the fps on my videos are 23.97.

also which one is better, divx mobile converter or dr.divx and why?

Yes, it's working on a 6120

Yes, it's working on a 6120 classic! I have one and testet it.
BUT, afer playing a DivX(XVid) Video for some seconds(20 or so) it's starting to stutter. Audiocodec is mpeg. Video has 644MB
The player does not play audio coded with AC3 :-(
Hopefully a skilled developer is reading this and help us out.

Watch the Bitrate

DivX Mobile Player will attempt to play any size video at any bitrate on any device. However, the performance will be limited based on the speed of the processor. DMP will drop video frames as needed during playback which means not all devices will achieve 30 fps for all bitrates. That's probably why you see the video stutter.

Typically we recommend to encode videos at 24-30 fps, 320x240 resolution, 300 kbps video and 128 kbps stereo audio. Most devices with a 200 Mhz processor (or faster) will play those videos well and it's a reasonable trade off between file size and video quality.

If you don't want to convert your videos, try one of the DivX certified phones. Some phones like the F500 and the Viewty will play much higher bitrates than DivX Mobile Player.

You were right

Thank you for your fast reply. I've just read your older post where you were saying that. You were right on the bitrate.

However I was experimenting with my nokia 6120 classic the whole day and found out, that encoding a video at 525x420 with 24-30 fps and a bitrate of 800 kbps with 128bit mp3 stereo audio the video runs very smooth. Amazing phone and certainly amazing DivX-Player. Keep up that good work DivXMobile! :)

Please excuse my bad english, I'm from Austria.

Nokia 6120 is S60 3rd Edition

The Nokia 6120 Classic uses the Symbian S60 3rd edition operating system. Here's the version of DivX Mobile Player you need: http://mobile.divx.com/divx/s60-3/DivXPlayer.sisx
