I've been enjoying using my DSM-330 on my HD Flatpanel TV and thought I'd try it on my Sony Wega 32in Widescreen as I am thinking about buying another box for use with this TV. But I've discovered that the output from the box can only be set to 4:3, I know it is advertised as a HD box but am stunned to realise I can not watch my DivX files in the proper manner without zooming in on them, and loosing definition, on a 16:9 SD TV. Why has this ability not been included? Is it not possible? I have already seen one negative comment posted elsewhere and I think when people realise this is the case it will put a lot of SD Widescreen owners off. I certainly won't be buying a second box unless a firmware update can correct this.

One other small thing that I think might be appreciated is to have an overlayed graphic that appears when the DSM-330 volume is adjusted. At the moment nothing indicates where the volume is set when the volume is used.

16:9 on Standard Definition TV

Hi

When I last posted on this thread it was suggested that an update would be available mid July. Has there been any progress on this issue yet? There appear to be regular updates fixing other issues and adding new functionality which are I am sure welcomed by many users. However, the compatibility issue is a pretty fundamental and important one for owners of 16:9 SD sets.

It would be really appreciated if this could be addressed soon

Many thanks.

An update is available here

Be careful to apply the correct one based on your region. It will determine the default of NTSC (USA) or PAL (EU).

Inside the zip file you will find the update procedure

For Europe http://labs.divx.com/files/DSM-330EU_1.1.2.37_prod.zip

For USA / Canada http://labs.divx.com/files/DSM-330USA_1.1.2.37_prod.zip

firmware

When I try to update with this it says "unable to write update.bin". I also had to rename the file in the .zip file from "1.1.2.00037_BugZapper-dlink-USA_complete.bin.wrapped4" to "update.bin". Is there some procedure I missed?

Not the perfect 16:9 fix

Just thought it was worth commenting. I've updated the firmware and this 16:9 fix isn't that good. Unfortunately it simply stretches the 4:3 image to 16:9. This means that photos and album art display incorrectly and look too wide.

I was wondering if this is the way high definition wide screen is dealt with? (I don't have a wide screen high def tv to test it on)

Would divx be able to fix this so that the image is not simply stretched?

16:9 fix - have you gone into setup and selected widescreen?

I updated the firmware to take advantage of the 16:9 aspect and found it works for me (at least i think it does). From what GreenMan says it sounds like you experienced the same as me, that after upgrading the firmware the picture is stretched to fit the widescreen (prob cos the box is set to 4:3 aspect). However, I then went into setup, video options and chose advanced menu where i then selected the 576i 16:9 option. TV now picture is now the correct aspect and not simply stretched, for example pictures display fine.

16:9 on Standard Definition TV's

Hi dsalmonsen,
I also have a 16:9 plasma TV, one of the last ones before HD became available Doh!! Anyway I am happy with the picture quality but would love to get rid of the letter box. How are we doing with this 16:9 SD update please? I would be happy to test if a pre-release is available.

Many Thanks

Engineering is starting development on this feature

Engineering is starting development on this feature this month. We will not have a release with this feature for at least 6 to 8 more weeks, but if there is a test version for you to try before then, I will let you know.

Hi

I was wondering if there has been any progress on the update to give us 16:9 on SD TVs? I have had my DSM-330 since the day it was launched in the UK and have been patiently waiting to get this feature so that I can fully enjoy using the unit. I would really appreciate it if this could be given some priority. Many thanks.

Progress on SD 16:9 ?

I wondered if there was any progress on support for standard definition widescreen tv's.

I currently enjoy using the divx connected device on a rather old but also rather large standard def 4:3 aspect tv. However, the tv is slowly showing faults and i've got the option of a standard definition widescreen tv for £50 which is cheaper than forking out for a good quality HD panel. Although smaller in size than my current TV for my viewing habbits films, and some tv shows i wont be losing any size with this SD widescreen tv providing there is support for 16:9 format.

obviously if the divx box still cant support standard def widescreen there is no point in getting this second hand telly.

Has anyone tried the PAL Plus 16:9 mode?

It is available under the High Definition display settings in the Setup menu.

Yes, maybe your TV does not support P (progressive)

We are looking into adding 16:9 support for SD in the future, sorry it can not be sooner. It is possible with firmware upgrade.

16:9 on Standard Definition TV's & Volume

I'm also concerned that I am unable to get the benefit of viewing my divx movies on my 16:9 SD widescreen TV. I had my DSM-330 on pre-order from Amazon UK for 3 months and couldn't wait to receive it after 2 years struggling to get a Linksys MCE extender to stream divx to my satisfaction using a variety of 3rd party programs.

I have to say that the DSM-330 does not disappoint in its ability to stream divx and other content effectively. However, it is VERY frustrating that I have to watch most movies in a severe letterbox format. Can I also make an appeal to the developers to add 16:9 SD support in the next upgrade. The DSM-330 is a superb product in all other respects - please please work your magic to allow us early adopters the opportunity to use it in all its glory!!

I also find the comment "and the low number of wide screen TV's" bizzare! c'mon guys can you please get some updates out soon? This is starting to seem more like an unfinished product released to the masses!

There is 16:9 PAL support

Since we first targeted the European market, PAL was considered more important. We are continually adding new features to this product, so in that sense it is certainly not finished.

When we looked at the percentage of users that had standard definition wide screen TV's it was not high, and not expected to grow either, since most new purchases are HDTVs.

Volume overlay is planned

We will also look at adding 16:9 support in SD mode. It was not added previously due to the priority of getting other features and the low number of wide screen TV's, but since we want to continue to improve the product, we can probably add it in a future release.

What about force 16:9?

let's say im watching a recorded tv show on my box, which is set to HD 16:9, while the video is 4:3. Half the screen is being unused. So there should be a function to stretch/force a video to be 16:9

Re:Volume overlay is planned

Thanks for the reply and good to know that the overlay is planned. I'm surprised you say there is a low number of widescreen TV's. It seems to me that all I've see in the shops for the last few years is widescreen TV's and I would have thought that most people who enjoy this kind of Technology would have a widescreen TV. Anyway, the 16:9 compatibility for SD TV's is something I look forward to and once it's available you'll have another Sale.

Snowdome.
