KBE a.k.a "kamiwa’s Batch Encoder"

KBE is a small tool I originally had written just for myself to help me optimize my DivX video encoding work flow. As it has now been running here for more than one and a half years, I thought, perhaps it is time to throw it at the public, and see what you can do with it. Find out more.

Possible reason why many read and few use KBE or comment?

Here is an as explanation from one reader. This is not a complaint. It seems many look at this tool but few use it. I am only one person with an opinion. So you may understand, the following text in the KBE description kept me from ever even trying KBE.

"Container: As we all know, DMF got its pros and contras. So now you got a choice: Instead of DivX you could use MKV or MP4. AVI is not supported and I doubt, it ever will be."

My brain does not know the abbreviation DMF. My brain thinks DivX == AVI. So I read and my brain understands this

"Container: As we all know, something got its pros and cons. Instead of AVI you could use MKV or MP4. AVI is not supported and I doubt, it ever will be."

Because I think I need an AVI for my DivX Ultra Certified Devices, I conclude KBE is a tool that canot make files for DivX Certified Devices.

I did not say I was smart. I am admitting the paragraph confused me a year ago. Maybe others too. Is the following true:

DMF means DivX Media Format container. DMF != AVI. KBE will make a DMF container that plays on DivX Certified Devices AND KBE will also output Matroska Container or MP4 container.

Cool

It is quite impressive tool. Very nice UI!

My main question, Is this tool open source. Any considerations to sell the source code and license it another company?

Please let me know

Commercial usage of KBE

KBE is completly dependent on a whole bunch of OpenSource tools. Some of them are under the GPL licencse others are LGPL.

I'm not an expert on law, but as far as I understand the GPL, this means that KBE itself is under GPL, which again means I have to grant you access to my source and the source of the used components.

Additionally GPL allows me to licencse KBE to you, but even then it still would be GPL, meaning that you yourself would have to make the source available to anyone asking for it.

Should you still be interested in the source, please contact me by email: kamiwa at kamiwa dot de.

Cut the main movie?

After getting a DVD vob onto the disk how can we have your cool batch encoder only encode the main movie? and not the whole DVD's worth of info?

kamiwa's picture

Encoding only part of a disk

When ripping the DVD to HDD, use a tool like DVDDecrypter or DVDShrink. It allows you to select only the title or chapter you want.

Thanks for the kudos

I had a few hundred reads on kamiwa.de but apart from weaver4 and keeperofdakeys on DivX forum, I hadn't received any feedback yet. So I was wondering, if that meant that there aren't any complaints (doubt it) or if it just was complete rubbish which wasn't worth a comment at all.

So thanks for your feedback Jon. Glad it was at least able to make you happy! :-)

BTW: Happy New Year to you all!
