WMP and MKV

WMP and MKV

I just installed divx 7 in hopes to get full MKV support on windows media player and windows media center. After the install i try and play a mkv and i get a "windows media player has encountered a problem while playing this file" error. How can i solve this?

Running windows 7 ultimate

Did you try the Tech Preview?

You said you installed DivX 7, but did you install our Windows 7 Tech Preview? It's available here (you must be logged in):

This should enable support of MKV on Windows 7 via Microsoft Media Foundation. There are also extensive forums on how users are configuring their systems here:

i thought that MKV support

i thought that MKV support was part of divx 7?

well i have installed just the DivX Tech Preview R3 and so far so good. The MKV plays right away and using the native windows 7 codecs. Now is it recommended to install divx h.264 and AAC codecs as well that are provided or just using the native windows 7 codecs are fine?

EDIT

It seems that the video and audio get out of sync really fast when you try to fast forward, like the sound play fine but the video speeds up to get up to par with the audio. sometimes i see this happen when i don't even d anything?

I'm having exactly the same

I'm having exactly the same problem. Video speeds up and gets out of sync with audio.

Windows Native Codecs

Yes, MKV and H.264 are the main features of DivX 7, but the filters are DirectShow based, which is something that doesn't let you use native codecs in Windows 7 - Microsoft Media Foundation gets priority over DirectShow, and also enables the streaming case for Xbox 360. Right now, you can't give other (non-Microsoft) codecs priority under Media Foundation (without hacking).

FF/RW can still present problems in the Tech Preview, as this is listed in the known issues and something we'll be working on improving for subsequent releases.

I'm going to move this thread into the Tech Preview forum, since this was started in the DivX creation forums.
