Win7(64bit) WMC Works but not extended through xbox360
OfflineEDIT: I'm using the retail version of Win7-64 bit.
When I play my test MKV file on the WMC through my computer it works flawlessly. When I open WMC on my xbox, I can see my MKV test file with thumbnail image and everything. When I try to open the file on my xbox, however, I get a message that says something to the effect of:
Video Error
Files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly. Restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer.
These files play locally on the media center PC through both Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player without issue.
1) I know that some MKV files just aren't going to work. Is there a way to check and see if this file is one of the unsupported formats that has been compiled into an MKV? I suspect this isn't the case because it works fine on my computer WMC w/out using Xbox as a media extender
2) I keep seeing references to other software like Haali media splitter and whatnot. The whole media file format and codec world is new to me. Can someone explain which programs I should try? Does Haali run within WMC or is it a standalone program that will transcode the original file into something that WMC will recognize more easily? I guess I want to know what 3rd party software I should try outside of DivX to make my 360 extender work.
3) Finally, does anyone know how the xbox uses media center? Does the xbox processor do the work or does the computer basically stream it's WMC content through to the Xbox as a passive interface? I suspect the xbox does something because it is the only part that's not working. I understand that this last question is better left for MS than the good people at DivX. Feel free to ignore.

I've had no stuttering so far. I have only watched a couple of hours worth of MKV media through my xbox, though. Probably 3 total files.
Is this the case with the test content we have posted here:

That content is MKV/H.264/AAC, so at the very least, this should work if everything is installed correctly.
When other codecs enter the mix, it's sometimes necessary to install other things to get it to work.
Can you let us know if the test content works, and if your content has AC3 audio, you may want to take a look at this, since it's been giving people good results:

The test content worked! So, I've done everything right, at least.
I installed the AC3 Audio filter and I still get the error message through the xbox. The issue seems to be that I need to install something else for it to work on my Xbox as an extender. How would I go about figuring this out? It is interesting that it works on MCE without an extender.

I installed the Haali Media Splitter and the MKV file in question now works on my 360. I even got the surround sound to work.
I had tried CCCP earlier, but that didn't work. The only issue now is with fast forwarding and whatnot. I can't drag the curse in MCE to fast forward and the remote for the XBOX only works in 30 second increments and often crashes (not a complaint, just noting for future development).
Finally, I've noticed that the quality is significantly degraded when going through the xbox as compared to VLC. My computer is newly built and should be pretty powerful. Are there any settings I can amp up to improve image quality? Or, is the bottleneck the 360 at this point?

I have this exact problem. After installing Tech Preview etc. All .mkv-files seems to work fine directly in Media Center (on the computer), but only some of them will run on the Xbox extender.
I have not yet tried this Haali Media Splitter that you mention. Is it this one?

Maybe this works, but personally I really don't like installing lots of different tools for just one function. Can we expect that a new version of Tech Preview will show up soon with full support for .mkv-files?
That is what worked for me. I hear you about not wanting to install a bunch of new programs. This is particularly true with the new Win7 and the likelihood of a pristine drive.
As I understand, and I'm sure i'll be corrected if I'm wrong, MKV isn't a single format so much as a package that contains an audio and video stream together. These two streams aren't limited to just one or two formats that DivX develops or is directly responsible for. I'm not suggesting it is unreasonable; I have no idea what goes into programming support. I'm just saying that you might have to make a tough choice.
Now I have tried the Haali package as well. Unfortunately this didn't help. I still get the Video Error message on my Xbox (for som certain .mkv files that works fine in Media Center).
I installed Haali with the default settings. Are there any changes/tweaks that I need to make to get luckier?
Install MediaInfo (google it). It will show you exactly what is in the mkv file.
Hmm... I'm not an expert on this area, but how would that help me in this matter?
It will help you because it will tell you more about the file (what formats are in the .mkv file) so the techs can identify which codecs you might be missing (among other problems).

Sorry for the ugly format up here. It's not my intention to "litter", so I still hope that someone pays attention to this problem...
One more thing... It looks like only mkv-files with longer play time (full movies) are affected. < 1 hour episodes seems to work fine. Could there be a logical pattern?
I feel bad that I encouraged you to install the program that gives all the info and no one responds. Frankly, you passed my knowledge level a while ago. I do hope someone is able to assist you.
