This afternoon I was going to watch a movie, streaming it from a website that I use regularly, with the DivX Web Player. I went through all of the normal processes and when the DivX player popped up it informed me that a new version was available. Like anyone would, I clicked download. The download completed successfully. I started up the installation and oh, this new version is only "compatible with Intel-based" Mac computers, but of course the old version that I have been using forever with no problems is... gone. Kickass, now I can't watch any of the shows or movies that I have been watching forever with no problem simply because this installer killed off my working version of the software and replaced it with something that is completely useless to me.

I've tried all over the web looking for an old version that will work, or another codec that will work with quicktime but alas, no such luck. The DivX website says that the new version will work with my PPC Powerbook G4, software version: 10.4.11, but something really weird is happening... IT DOESN'T.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to where I can find a download for the DivX version JUST before this one? How about an alternative player/codec for QuickTime?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Not trying to bitch too much, but I know for sure that I'm not the only one with this problem.

PROBLEM SOLVED for PPC mac 10.4.11

I found this info on a forum at this address. http://forum.ninjavideo.net/index.php?topic=40094.msg652731#msg652731

Thanks to the Yeti King for his efforts in solving this problem. This should be a lesson to you all that macs are supper crappy.

Hi everyone,

I think i've got the PPC mac problem figured out. Will list the steps... please bear with me because it may be more than necessary but at the end of the day, it'll have you set up with a divx 6.7 build and working webplayer.

Btw, Ninja video folks, big props for a fantastic site. don't know what I'd do without you. :-)

Disclaimer: this worked on a powerbook G4 (PPC) 10.4.11. Can't vouch for 10.5 on PPC or 10.3.

Phase 1: Deleting files to get a (relatively) clean state after the botched upgrade

1) Go to '/Library/Receipts' (i.e the system Library) and delete any files with 'divx' in the title. You should have at least 1 that says 'DivXWebPlayer.pkg'
2) Go to '/Library/QuickTime' and delete the files with 'divx' in the title. Should be two: 'Divx Decoder.component' and 'DivX Encoder.component'
3) Go to '/Library/Application Support' and delete the 'DivX' folder.
4) Go to '/Library/Internet Plug-Ins' and delete 'DivXBrowserPlugin.plugin'
5) Go to '/Applications' and delete 'DivX Converter' and 'DivX Player'
6) Empty trash and logout.
7) Log back in...this should clear out all unnecessary junk. okay next phase.

Phase 2: Downloading necessary files.

1) Download DivX (sanctioned/official) version [6.7] here: http://support.divx.com/faq/view/supportFAQen003/DivX-Legacy-Version

2) Download the DivX webplayer beta [1.4.0] here: http://download.divx.com/divx/webplayer/labs/DivXWebPlayerBeta2.dmg

Phase 3: installation... fingers crossed.

1) Install the 6.7 pkg first.
2) Then install the webplayer beta2.
3) Log out and log back in
4) Go to ninja video and try it out. {FYI, somehow the post-installation test run worked better in Firefox than Safari or Camino (my browser of choice).. not sure if there's a reason or it was a temporary fluke.}

Phase 4: troubleshooting or its not working, damn it...

Probably some files from the botched upgrade hidden in the system throwing a wrench into the machine. here's a work-around that might to the trick:

1) Download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/ [disclaimer: don't work for the company... in fact didn't know this existed till a few hours ago. regardless, big up Charlessoft!]
2) Open Pacifist, point to 6.7 DivX install package [via 'Open Package...' button/menu option]
3) Click on 'Contents of DivX for Mac Installer.pkg' (i.e. select everything listed in file window)
4) Click 'Install' on toolbar and go through the motions... you know the drill
5) if it asks to replace say yes to all.
6) when done, try to rerun webplayer beta installation. It might say that nothing needs to be done. Thats fine. If it doesn't stop you, go through the installation again.
7) Log out, log in and you should be golden.

Disclaimer: I really honestly hope this works for a lot of people but I know that it won't for all. Just trying to help everyone return to our beloved Ninjavideo site.

cheers,
yeti king

Had the same problem...

I had the same problem as the original poster. I used the link that was listed here and the dmg that downloads is empty.

I can not get back to where I was and DIVX 7 doesnt work in any ways for power PC.

Any suggestions?

Old Installer

Did you try this one, which is listed at the top of the DivX Plus Web Player forums?

Variable?

You guys made any headway on figuring out what the variable is regarding the Web Player 2.0 working for some people, but not working for others, when they're all using the same site and/or video? We've heard a lot of reports that some users aren't having any problems with the new version, while others obviously are. Personally, I've experienced both; on some sites, I'll be able to load up one video, but not another. Error message is the common "The file you are trying to play has failed to finish downloading and can no longer play." that everyone is getting.

I know it's not a matter of trying to load videos that have been removed from the hosting provider; I've had my laptop right next to my desktop, which is running v1.5 of the Web Player, and I've been able to stream videos under 1.5 that I can't with 2.0.

I know you guys have recognized the issue already; I'm just curious if you've isolated the variable that's causing it yet.

Thanks

Same new version DivX issue but...

...when i go to install the old version it says "A newer version of this software already exists on this disk." I tried unsuccessfully to delete the new version from my Macintosh HD, so, how do I be successful?

Legacy Versions

Hi njk_15,

If you need to roll back to an older version of the DivX software, you can do download them for free from the DivX Support website here:

http://support.divx.com/faq/view/supportFAQen003/DivX-Legacy-Version

This has a download link for the DivX 6.7 for Mac bundle--which was the most recent version that supported PowerPC Macs.
