making divx my default media player

When choosing DivX Player to accept .divx as your default extension on Vista, the DivX Player could be hidden. You'd have to click the tiny arrow to reveal all other possible program. Here's the instruction you can follow.

1) Right-click on the divx video that you want to set DivX Player to play as its default extension.

2) Choose "Open With" > "Choose Default Program..."

3) A window pop up and asking you to choose the program to set the .divx as the default player. Look for "Other Programs". On the right, there's a long line and then the small down arrow. Click that and you should see "DivX Player". Choose that and then make sure the check-mark is set on "Always use the seletected program to open this kind of file"

If you did not see "DivX Player" on that list, click on "Browse..." button and browse your selection to "C:\Program Files\DivX\DivX Player" and choose "DivX Player.exe"

4) Click "OK" button and/or "Apply" (if applicable).

The next time you double-click on .divx extension, DivX Player will start. I hope I gave a straight forward answer to your question as I have a hard time decoding your post.
