Can we get an update on subtitles?
Can anybody from the staff provide any update status on subtitles? Are you guys testing a solution? found a hack? Dealing with legal issues with microsoft? Don't have a flipping clue how to do it?
I mean gives us something....its obvious that subtitles is a big thing, now that many movies are using foreign languages with english and we need those subtitles. District 9 is coming out soon, and thats a perfect example of a movie that without subtitles is hard to keep track of the plot.
Does microsoft have a say on your rollout plans?
Workarounds: ( to be implemented while you convince MS to do the thing like there supposed to work )
problem 1:
do it like the halli splitter. put an icon on the tray and we can select the audio/subtitle track from there. is not the perfect solution, but until you find a better one, at least we can watch with subtitles on PC. It will play the default video/audio/subtitle track ( don't know if it will work on extenders )
problem 2: this is were the things go bad... design your own h.264 Media foundation decoder :P . There are tools available to change the default h.264 decoder for WMC without breaking live-TV
I like your suggestion #2. Can you lead me to the water? lol
Thanks for the update :)
...although it's bad news for me coz I was really hoping to get the subs working in Media Center.
It's not much, but I do appreciate all your efforts for searching the solution, but I also understand that there might not be one available. I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone does figure it out tho.

Divx 7 is great! But now when Standalone Media Players are beeing cheap im gonna buy one. Then im going to stream movies from my computer thru that instead of my xbox. Then i can enjoy subtitles and DTS :) But hope Divx 7 gets the DTS and subtitle support that it needs to take the world :)
I mean don't get me wrong i love that this guys are investing their time into developing this technology, so we can view our movies in such an easy to use container.
But reality is MKV without subtitles is like a garden without flowers.
I mean without subtitles we could have all the movies in .mp4 or wmv.
We don't want a specific date when is going to be available. We just want to know if progress has been made. Some positive reassurance that we will someday see subtitles thru an extender a.k.a xbox360.:p
That i will no longer have to re-encode my movies with subtitles in them. That someday we shall have a choice!!!
The silence on this is deafening. Others have asked numerous times.
It would be nice to get an update one way or another, but I fear we won't hear much of anything if and when an update comes out.
My personal guess is that if microsoft does have a say, they may not be allowed to say it.
But any news on the matter of subtitles would be nice, altho I'm starting to be a bit afraid that there are no news about subtitles.

Just started to watch my 1080p rip of District 9 with the track 1 subtitle for the alien subs with nothing. Came here and this is the only thread I could find discussing and it was left over a month ago un-bumped. Any updates or fixes?
Any update on this?
Without subtitle support all this work is nearly useless.
Please try.
Thanks
I too was looking for an update on this. I have no idea what MS were thinking! While I appriciate that DirectShow wouldn't be around forever and the industry demanded a protected video path, they should have made it possible to do something such as overlays!
As was mentioned maybe writing your own replacement WMF H264 codec is the only solution.
Any news?

I just wanted to fill you guys in on where we are at with subitles, MKV, and Windows 7. In our next major release scheduled for early 2010 we will have a great solution for playing back subtitles (SRT, SSA, ASS) in third-party media players (including WMP) for 7, Vista, and XP.
We have not discovered a good way to do subtitles in Media Foundation and Windows Media Center (WMC). There are two main reasons for this.
1. WMC doesn't expose a method for managing subtitles in third-party formats (it only does it for DVR-MS, WTV, and DVD).
2. When we get into the Media Foundation world Windows uses its own H.264 decoder and controls the renderer so we don't have a method for putting the subtitles onto the video. This is also the case for Extenders like the Xbox 360.
We have reached out to the Media Center community to see if anyone else has an idea on how to overcome these obstacles, but everyone else has come to the same conclusions. If you have any ideas we are all ears though.
We will also have great subtitle solutions in our DivX Player and the DivX Plus HD (.mkv) hardware devices that are on the horizon.
