.avi downloading but black

For the new divx web player (I didn't write down the version number but I think it was 2.0.2) when I try to watch avi's on certain file servers it begins to download and the time indicates that it is playing but the screen is black. If I try to seek to a buffered part of the film I can usually see about 1 sec of the film and then it resumes showing a black screen. I had success with .mkv's though. Unfortunately the sites that I have used to test the player hosted copyrighted material. If this is of interest I would be more than willing to re-download the web player and browse to some selected testing sites.
