DivX Converter 6.5 Beta for Vista

Converter AvatarNews: The installer was updated to solve the expiration issue.

Newest News: The DivX for Windows bundle has been updated with this version on DivX.com

For too long now, DivX Converter has lived in a fantasy world where “vista” means only a distant view or prospect. With much kicking and screaming, we recently managed to drag him into the DivX operating room for some OS-support surgery.

He may look the same on the outside, but he has had all his major organs transplanted and now he needs your help to make sure he can survive on Vista without life support.

If you’re a Windows Vista user, we encourage you to download the new Vista-compatible DivX Converter 6.5 beta and help us get DivX Converter back on his feet.

Read more to download, brief yourself on known issues and changes to this version.
Known issues:
  • Some VOB files may have audio/video synch issues when converted.
  • When multiple subtitle tracks or multiple audio tracks are chosen, the output currently contains multiple tracks of the default subtitle or audio track only.
  • DivX Converter shortcuts remain under the Start menu after the program is uninstalled.

  • The Beta download has expired Please down load DivX Converter 6.5 from DivX.com

*Windows XP or 2K users shouldn't feel completely left out. DivX Converter still works on those operating systems and, as always, we appreciate your feedback as well.

Question

Is there any difference to use DivX Converter 6.5 Beta for Vista and for XP? Thanks

netmark's picture

The difference between Vista

The difference between Vista and XP is about computability. It works fine with XP and have problems with Vista Aero.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1

kevinsender's picture

It is kind of vista

It is kind of vista compatible. It just aint aero compatible. And the converter doesn't work on vista. Other then that, DivX Player is WAY better the windows media player. It just makes the files look better!

I'm using this Beta under Vista and I have about half of my encodes coming out jittery. This is due to the program as other conversion processess work fine. Anyone else noticing this problem and have you come up with a work around?

Convert OK with VirtualDub

am working on 2 PC, one under XP32 Pro and the other one with Vista32 Ultimate. The first one is doing his job quite well, but for the second one, I am still hoping stuff will work in a not so far future (like Windows Media Center...).
I don't have installed the beta version of the DivX Converter, because it detects that a newer version is available. As I want to keep the latest version of the codec, I don't go further.
For the moment, I am working with VirtualDub or VirtualDub-mpeg2 and the latest DivX codec. There is actually no problem at all under Vista.

I've always used one of two

I've always used one of two programs for this part of the process: DVDShrink or Smartripper. DVDShrink is my favorite by far, but on occasion Smartripper does the deed well.

multicore support

I read in Tom's Hardware that the Divx codec took advantage of multiple cores. I don't understand why Divx Converter is only utilizing 1 out of my 4 cores. I was hoping for substantially faster performance.

Can you make it work with muilti processor design?

In order to create a better software which utilizes all hardware such as dual core's, quad core's, is there any way I can help?

Hello to all,

after several tests, I must say that the last beta version works perfect under Vista x64. Using codec 6.6.1 and AC3 filter version 1.11

Final release

Is there any clue as to when you will release the final version? Will DVR-MS files be supported? Will you take care of the A/V sync problem when converting VOB files?

Does this work for PAL

Just used this to encode "Dark Remains". Worked quickly but the sound was too quiet. Worse still, the aspect ratio was all wrong. Its a widescreen movie but encoded as 4:3 by the looks of it - it all looks squashed. When the vob files are loaded, and default home theatre is selected, it wants to encode at 720 x 394 at 29 fps - this isn't right for a PAL video. Otherwise, worked ok! Thanks for the hard work you are putting into making this work for Vista.

Converter's picture

RE: Does this work for PAL

To boost the audio try the suggestion here:
http://support.divx.com/cgi-bin/divx.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1604

As for the aspect ratio, that should work in this beta version but the bug is in the current version on DivX.com. Try downloading and re-installing the beta version from the link below and see if that solves the problem (when installing make sure to say NO when it asks if you want to install the current version.)

thanks!

RE: Does this work for PAL

Do you know when the 'current version'will have this aspect ratio bug fixed? The current beta has expired and the current version still contains the bug. Any advice/fix would be appreciated.
Thanks!!

aspect ratio bug

we will be releasing an update with the fix in it first week in September...

this thing is slow as sh*t

its about time that you steped into 2007 and thought about offering support for Vista users.. but this encoder is slower then anything i have ever used...

today around 3 or 4 pm i finished recording a VHS with my HVR-1600, which encoded as a mpeg-1 file, about 2.6 gigs... found and installed this beta program, and draged the file to encode... it is now 10:30 pm and the encoding finallay went to 100% but for the last 10 minutes it has been sitting at "building divx menus 0%" 6 1/2 hours and the file is still not done... this is way beyond acceptable......

3.2gig cpu dual core
1gig ddr
250gig hd, with about 100 gigs free....
512mb dvi video card

oh wait.. it finallay decided to complete as i am writing this.. lets see what the file size and quality looks like....

ok.. it did take the file down from 2.6 gigs to 735kb and quality is similar to the original... but... 6 1/2 hours is way too unacceptable.... it should take no longer then 1 1/2 to 2 hours..... currently it takes times as long to convert as the video length is.. it should take no more then a 1:1 ratio...

psy_guy's picture

Slow as....

I've run this converter on two different machines, one with a Pentium Dual Core (3.2) and on an AMD 64 2x (2.0).

I've noticed that it runs nearly 2x as fast on the AMD processor AND yes...it tends to lag out when it's "building divx menus 0%"...and it never changes from 0% until it's done (odd, huh?).

The one primary thing I did that sped it up was this: 1 gig ddr just isn't enough really - max out if possible (I'm running 4 and it has made a large difference).

How long was the video? Reducing from 2.6 g to 735kb is amazing...from 2.6 g to under a meg?!?

sleepyhead's picture

dual core

It uses only one processor of two when I convert movies, if it could use two threads it would be greatful... ;)

Expired

Hello Everyone,

Yes, the beta Converter has expired and we are working hard on getting the official release out. Thank you for your patience and I will notify all of you on here when the official release is out (very soon, I promise)

JasonL98's picture

Expired

While i understand expiring the converter, why expire it BEFORE the release of a final version, i would rather use the beta untill i have a final release rather than have a period where i cannot use the converter at all.

Converter's picture

Expired

that is how it was intended. the expiration date is hard coded in the converter and is not a switch we turn on or off from here...

sorry again and we will rectify the situation soon.

So am i missing something. Is there another Divx beta to download so i do not get the Expired message?
Thanks

psy_guy's picture

Expired?

Since downloading this beta I've had absolutely no problems encoding video, but tonight I start up the converter and I am told that it has expired and to come HERE for a newer version?

Can this be dealt with? I see that one other person has mentioned the same issue on a new install, but in my case I've been using it for nearly 30 days now without any problems...

Please assist...

UPDATE - I set my computer's clock back to the 10th of July and it opened up...go figure :)

Anyone else having this issue and did this solution work for you???

kimosavez's picture

Thanks but....

haha, ive never been on a forum thing like this before...this is brilliant!!!!now then...i done exactly what you said and it worked!!!brilliant!!!and thanks a million...i feel like im a step closer to getting this done!!!!
BUT....
now that that little divx thing opens up...how do i get my dvds onto my hard drive using it???i had a dvd in my laptop but it wouldnt drag into the little divx thingy???
thanks sooo much for your help!!!

ok...what i done was, i clicked on "add" and then went to computer and selected the dvd that is in my laptop(lord of the rings!!!!!!quality!!!). now then, i clicked that and 18 files came up....all VOB files or something. it wont let me drag them across when i highlight them all. but when i double click on one of them it does go into the divx thing, but then error 5083 comes up. for one of them it says that "divx cannot encode files with variable frame rates. please make sure all input files contain a constant frame rate".
what am i doning wrong????
i swear....me and computers just are not compatible!!!!

psy_guy's picture

RE: Thanks but....

I've never had a 5083 error, but I believe it's the way you are getting your VOB files from the DVD to your hard drive.

I've always used one of two programs for this part of the process: DVDShrink or Smartripper. DVDShrink is my favorite by far, but on occasion Smartripper does the deed well.

Get a copy of DVDshrink, and here is a link to a guide on it's use: http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dvdshrink31-main.htm

Once DVDshrink copies the files to your hard drive and into one folder, select all the vob files and drag them onto the converter...snap, that's it!

Hope this helps!

kimosavez's picture

im telling ya...computers and me just dont mix!!

im sorry i didnt get back to ya to say thanks, but ive just beena bit busy!!!
now then...i got lord of the rings and put it thru dvd shrink and it worked no probs. so then i went into the hard drive where it was saved and it came up under all these UBP and IFO files and VTS 1,2,3 etc files. so then i highlighted them all and dragged them into the divx icon. first this box came up and said divx couldnt do it cause it does not support the file type and to make sure the input video is a supported input for divx. but i just hit the red X button and then it dissappears and i hit convert on the divx icon. it starts analizing...and the n in stars converting it. now then..i left it and went to work to come home and find that my laptop had gone into sleep mode or something...so i log back in and the divx thing says it couldnt do it....so i try again...and the exact same happens again(my laptop had gone into sleep mode or something). so i change my settings so it wont go to sleep again and try a third time...this time it stops after 23%.

i just dont know what the hell im doing wrong...but IF it was saving some of it....were does it go once its been converted????
this is driving me mad!!!!!
thanks again for all your help!!!!!!!
actually...just thinking....should i be dragging both the video AND the audio files into the divx icon???ive just been going into the video one???

psy_guy's picture

Mixing with Computers...

The best way to add the correct files to the converter is to open it first, click on "view list" then add, go to the folder where you stored the movie and only the VOB files needed will show up. Highlight them all and open them, then pick your options (I have to boost the audio for better sound almost always for some reason), and click on convert.

kimosavez's picture

its just not working???

yeah....ive done everything that youve told me to do and again(this must be the fifth time ive done it)but it always seems to stop at exactly 50% of completion.......i really just dont have a f@*@$%^ clue as to what im doing wrong!!!! i have vista premium. all i want to do is get all my dvds onto my hard drive....surely in this day and age it can be easily done!!! i have the dvd shrink. i have some version of divx(on my desktop i only have 2 divx icons...the converter and divx movies((which opens another box that has four other icons...three ov which lead me to a web page and one...divx movies...that doesnt seem to open at all))). hpow do i know i have the right divx program??? and when the divx converter is finished completing a film....where does it store it???
im reallly sorry yet gratefull that your helping me, but i really want to know how to do this. if ya can tell me which divx program to download and ill start from scrath??!!!!soory dude.....i hate being a hasstle!!!!!!!
do ya reckon this "new version" that 'converter' is talking about on this page will work with vista????

SeaBass's picture

What version?

AC3 filter version 1.11stable or lower. What happens then?

psy_guy's picture

not working...

Some others in here have mentioned that their converters are stopping at 50%...there seems to be some problems that vary from computer to computer here...

As for where the movies are stored...right click on the converter (when it's not converting) and you can see or choose the destination directory and also the temp directory.

Wish I could help more...

PLEASE HELP ME!!

hello there,
i have just bought a laptop with vista on it. i have been trying for the last few months to transfer all my dvds onto an external hard drive that i bought. now when i do that, i want to have the film title and a little picture of it(the way divx does it for ya....so all you have to do is click on the film and it plays!!). now then, i have tried soooo many times to do it and it just never works. now then, i thought this new converter(6.5...) would do the trick but it doesnt even seem to load up for me. when i click on the desktop icon it tells me that this version of divx converter has expired and to visit the web page to get the newer version. can someone pllleeeeaasseeee tell me what the hell im doing wrong. any help would be hugely appreciated!!!
kimosavez
p.s. im pretty computer illiterate

psy_guy's picture

RE: PLEASE HELP ME!!

I've had the beta of Converter installed now since it came out and it worked perfectly (although many others have had problems with it).

On the 20th of July it began to give me the same message you're getting. Basically it says it has expired.

As I mentioned in my other post, I figured I'd try the (very old) method of changing my computer's clock back before what I'm assuming is the end of a "30 day trial" type function within Converter. That date would be the 20th (since the program came out on June 21st...30 days).

I'm using Vista Home Premium here, so any instructions may vary: I'm sure you know how to do this, but since you stated you are computer illiterate, click on your time in the system tray, click "change date and time settings." When the window appears click on "Change date and time..." Now select a date before the 20th of July and click OK. Click OK again and you should be back to your desktop.

Try to open it now...it worked for me :)

Good luck

5090

The 5090 error usually means there is something wrong with the input file.

What is the file format, video and audio codec? You can use Gspot to check. Does the file play on your computer without error?

Custom resolution not quite right

I've noticed when encoding VOBs, if I select 'use custom resolution' in the file settings, and select say 640x352, t always chops-off 4 pixels, resulting in a video with 636x348 dimensions.

If I select 644x356 it gives me the 640x352 I want, so that is an easy work-around, but I am wondering if you know why it knocks 4 off each side every time?

Cheers,

Stephen

Converter's picture

Custom resolution not quite right

Do these files have black bars? If so, the Converter will adjust accordingly to make sure they are stripped off correctly.

Do the converted files look alright when on playback?

stephend's picture

Custom resolution not quite right

Ah yes - it's a DVD+RW of a show I recorded off the TV, and I think there are some small bars on all sides after my PVR records it (my PVR seems to record everything on screen and a little extra around the edges for some reason - on the old Doctor I used to remove these manually), so that must be what it's stripping out. Thank you for the explanation!

Installing DivX Converter beta

When you install the beta installer from labs you will get the question:

"Would you like to automatically download the latest version instead?"

select "No thanks, I'd like to install this older version."

If you select yes, it will download and install the current Converter that is on DivX.com, that is not compatible with Vista and it will not install this beta version which is.

The beta version on labs is compatible with Vista Ultimate 32 bit.

You can check that you have the right beta version by going to C:\Program File\DivX\DivX Converter and check that the version number of the Converter.exe is 6.5.0.66. If it is not, then you have the wrong version installed.
