That’s right – just when you thought we couldn’t crank out Mac products any faster, we’ve gone and done it!

We’ve been tinkering in our dungeons and just couldn’t wait to get this in-the-works DivX Player for the Mac out so you can see what cool things we’re cooking up on the Mac!

Cool Features

The DivX Player supports playback of .divx movies (well, duh!) but also works with many other formats including many types like .mov, .avi. .mp4 and so on. It’s got all the standard player features - including full screen playback, of course - plus some features never seen before.

What might those be, you ask? Well, there’s the “Desktop Dimmer” for one. It allows you to darken, or “dim” your entire desktop to any degree you wish to enhance your viewing experience. Check it out:

This is really cool to keep all that desktop clutter from getting in the way of your movie viewing pleasure… Pretty cool, huh?!

That’s just the start: Turn on the “Fade Out Window When Playing” preference and during playback – like magic! - the actual window of the player fades away during playback, leaving just the pure, unadulterated display of the movie itself!

After all, you’re watching your movie – you don’t need no stinkin’window around it!

But should you need the window back, just move your mouse and –BAM! - the window pops back, at your beck and call, ready to do your bidding.

So, how much would you pay for all this!? Well, don’t answer that (and besides we’ll be giving it away for free!) because there’s MORE!

More?!

That’s what I said… more!

Don’t you hate when you lose access to certain functionality of a player just because you’re in full-screen mode? Well, that won’t happen with the DivX Player because when you move your mouse to the top of the screen in full-screen mode the menu bar smoooooothly fades into view – ooooh! -- giving you full access to all there is – go slow mo, switch to another movie, loop through all open movies, whatever!

All while move playback continues…

Whew… that’s cool, if I do say so myself. And I do. But there’s even more DivX Innovation to be found! Are you playing back a movie that’s small, or playing a large movie resized down such that the play controls extend beyond the window bounds?

Uh oh, that’s bad!

Or is it!?!? :-)

Nope! Just mouse over the edge of the window and the controls slide smoothly back into view. Now ya gotta admit that’s pretty dang cool!!

Download

Ok, ok, so I figure I’m rambling by now, so just take the DivX Player for a spin and see for yourself! The player requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.

Caveat Klaatu Barada Nikto

Keep in mind this is an initial Beta release – warts and all and with plenty of room for improvement. But that’s exactly why we want to get this quickly out to all you cool DivX-Labs-Folk so that YOU can help us make it the bestest that it can be… so give it a whirl and let us know what suggestions you have and what bugs you find!

Note: these links are also in the actual player in the “Extras” menu… for those of you who don’t like to actually remember things… you know who you are! 

Note to Owners of Intel-based Macs

If you own an Intel-based Mac you have a choice to make: the Red Pill or the Blue Pill!

Our next release of the DivX Player will address this issue, but for now you will have to decide if you want to be able to view DivX Content in the DivX Player or the QuickTime Player. You can't (yet) have both.

Yes, that's pretty lame, but geesh it's only a beta! Give us a little time and this'll all be squared away.

Anyway, you can install DivX 6 for Mac for Intel and have an Intel-based DivX Decoder for use in QuickTime Player (and other Intel-based applications that playback QuickTime movies) or you can install the DivX Player (which installs the PowerPC version of the DivX Decoder) and experience first hand the true nature of DivX Movie Enjoyment as it was intended: in the ease and comfort of your new DivX Player for Macintosh!

The choice is yours, Neo. Which will it be? :)

For those who were early

For those who were early implementors of the Divx Web Player, like myself, and want to use Divx as their Video player of choice for their own web sites, you might have noticed a drastic change of strategy.
For one thing, all references are made only to Stage 6, and Divx has stopped promoting the Web Player as the vehicle for streaming Video from web sites.
There have been several upgrades/enhancements in the Divx Software bundle, Except for the Divx Web Player Web Player version 3.1 is still included, as all of the other Divx products have been upgraded several times.
Just look at the comment about Beta 2, "Once again, grab Beta 2, install it and head over to Stage6 for some testing." Just Stage 6.
The Web Player has become much less reliable than the early versions of the Web Player, to the point that earlier Divx videos posted on web sites, that used to work, no longer work, or work occasionally.
Questions about streaming video aren't answered anymore from the Divx support forum or from email or phone tech support. Heck the Divx Web Player doesn't even have its own category on the Divx Support Forum.
Divx support told me flat out and more than once, that they know that the Web Player doesn't work and have no idea when it will be fixed.
When streaming video is referred to by Divx, since 1.3x came out, has only been about usage with Stage6 stored Divx files.
This is my opinion,
I think Divx has abandon the Divx Web Player altogether as a solution for streaming video except for Stage6 stored videos.
Instead of the Divx Web Player product development, I believe that Divx is now focused on a new product that doesn't have much in the way of details yet, DivX Connected.
It just doesn't make sense for Divx to leave the major gap of not having a stable and reliable streaming Video solution. Then when I saw the "teaser" about Divx Connected, it now makes sense to me.
I think it is a marketing decision, that certainly I am in no position to judge.
Anyone's thoughts ??
