DivX Player 6.8.1 Beta 1
DivX Player 6.8.1 Beta 1
We've got a brand spanking new build of DivX Player for you to er.. "play" with! [1] . This beta features a complete rewrite of much of the player's internals in order to add support for files larger than 4GB, rendering via Direct3D, QuickTime .mov and .mp4 support, and more.
[1] - (Please accept our sincere apologies, that pun was terrible!)
Large file support
DivX Player 6.8.1 features big changes to the file parser that enable it to play files larger than 4GB. While it's unusual to encounter such large files for standard definition content, high definition material that crosses the 4GB boundary is becoming far more common. To allow for those larger HD files our new parser supports AVI 2 files of (nearly) limitless size.
QuickTime support
You can now play QuickTime .mov and .mp4 files in DivX Player! You'll need to install QuickTime 7 to do so but don't worry; DivX Player will prompt you if you don't already have it installed. DivX Player can play QuickTime files containing video and audio, but not audio only.
Direct3D renderer
Debuting in DivX Player 6.8.1 is support for rendering via Direct3D. By using Direct3D DivX Player is more compatible with the new Aero environment of Windows Vista. Direct3D is now the default renderer for DivX Player, but it can still fall back to rendering via DirectDraw if necessary. If you're using Windows 2K or XP you should make sure that you have DirectX 9 installed, and you'll need a graphics card supporting PixelShader 2.0 or better. Graphics cards that fully support DirectX 9.0 or better also support PixelShader 2.0.
Real-time de-interlacing
DivX Player can now de-interlace video in real-time during playback, removing the jagged edges sometimes seen during motion when viewing interlaced video on progressive displays.
DivX 6.8 decoder
DivX Player 6.8 has been updated with the new DivX 6.8 decoder, which has performance enhancements for dual-core and quad-core computers. Follow this link for more information about DivX Codec 6.8, including a performance comparison with older versions.
High quality subtitles
DivX Player 6.5 introduced support for external SRT subtitles, which are very common on the Internet. This beta version of 6.8.1 improves SRT support by rendering the subtitles at the screen native resolution, making the subtitles clearer and easier to read.
Better trick play
In older versions of DivX Player trick play (a.k.a. fast forward and rewind) was rather coarse, allowing you to navigate only through sparse key-frames at speed. This version of DivX Player vastly improves fast forwarding by providing different speeds ranging from 2x all the way up to 32x. Clicking the fast-forward button multiple times increases the speed. At lower speeds fast-forwarding is smooth, so long as your system can keep up, letting you stop on the exact piece of video that you want to see.
Downloading DivX Player 6.8.1 Beta 1:
DivX Player 6.8.1 Beta 1 is part of the DivX for Windows package and can be installed on top of any prior version of DivX to update it. If you are a registered user of DivX 6 your registration will always be retained, whether you choose to try this beta or if you choose to re-install the last official release of DivX for Windows.
Important: While using this beta software the built-in update system may inform you that a new version is available and prompt you to update. Please ignore this prompt while using the beta, otherwise your installation will be reverted to the last official release version of DivX Player.

For those who were early
For those who were early implementors of the Divx Web Player, like myself, and want to use Divx as their Video player of choice for their own web sites, you might have noticed a drastic change of strategy.
For one thing, all references are made only to Stage 6, and Divx has stopped promoting the Web Player as the vehicle for streaming Video from web sites.
There have been several upgrades/enhancements in the Divx Software bundle, Except for the Divx Web Player Web Player version 3.1 is still included, as all of the other Divx products have been upgraded several times.
Just look at the comment about Beta 2, "Once again, grab Beta 2, install it and head over to Stage6 for some testing." Just Stage 6.
The Web Player has become much less reliable than the early versions of the Web Player, to the point that earlier Divx videos posted on web sites, that used to work, no longer work, or work occasionally.
Questions about streaming video aren't answered anymore from the Divx support forum or from email or phone tech support. Heck the Divx Web Player doesn't even have its own category on the Divx Support Forum.
Divx support told me flat out and more than once, that they know that the Web Player doesn't work and have no idea when it will be fixed.
When streaming video is referred to by Divx, since 1.3x came out, has only been about usage with Stage6 stored Divx files.
This is my opinion,
I think Divx has abandon the Divx Web Player altogether as a solution for streaming video except for Stage6 stored videos.
Instead of the Divx Web Player product development, I believe that Divx is now focused on a new product that doesn't have much in the way of details yet, DivX Connected.
It just doesn't make sense for Divx to leave the major gap of not having a stable and reliable streaming Video solution. Then when I saw the "teaser" about Divx Connected, it now makes sense to me.
I think it is a marketing decision, that certainly I am in no position to judge.
Anyone's thoughts ??

Chapter Problems w/ Ultra?
I updated to 6.8 Divx Player and now when I open a .divx file that I encoded w/ a menu displaying chapters, I can click on any chapter and the movie always starts from the beginning.
I figured maybe it was a bug, so I upgraded to this beta version and am still getting the same results.
I reinstalled the Divx Bundle w/ Divx Player 6.7 and now the chapter points are working again.
All files have been encoded using Divx 6.7 and 6.8 and the program I used was TMPGEnc DVD Author w/ Divx Authoring.
Anyone else having this problem?
Chapter Problem
Hi, I have the same problem.
In my case I use Divx Authour to cut the movie in chapter´s. I resolve the problem rename the chapter´s and create a new divx file.
video
over all its a good beta player, but some videos, that played well on the previous player, are pixelated and choppy
Trick Play
Hi There, I definitely like the new player. I have noticed a huge improvement yet again in visual quality over the previous player - picture seemed sharper when there are fast moving objects. I would like to say that the Trick Play on my lap on works well when fast forwarding not on the rewind.
Not sure if it is due to my gutless laptop or whether further refinement is required, but I did notice you mentioned only fastforward is smooth and nothing about rewind (so assume its just further refinement).
Just thought I'd let you know. I am running a Dell 1501 laptop with an AMD Dual Core TL56 chip, Radeon Xpress 1150 plus 2gigs of RAM and am running Vista (not exactly earth shattering but does chug a long ok for a basic system).
Nice work for a Beta. Keep up the great work!!
Video Play Back
I have started to experience choppy video playback but only under dual monitor output display and only on 1 particular video to date.
To alleviate this I have disabled video deblocking with sharpening under the codec. Have to say I don't think this is a codec thing because I was using the current codec under a previous version of the player and this did not occur.
Interestingly not all movies seem to be effected either so far this seems to be a one off.
I looked at my CPU usage and it went through the roof during playback in full-screen mode.
OOOPs!
I posted my comment for this beta player under the 6.6.1 Beta converter blog! See here

.divx > 4GB?
Does this mean that DivXmux will be updated to support muxing larger than 4GBs? That would be sweet!
