Hi there.

I've been using server 1.3.1 Build 10 since it became available as an auto-update and just noticed the CPU usage is quite high, with DivXConnected.exe between 8% and 10% at all times when idle (no client connected). This seems a bit high to me, as I don't recall earlier versions going over 5% when idle.

Anyone else seeing this?

I would run a copy of

I would run a copy of procmon http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
using the server process as a filter. My bet would be you'll see the service continually checking the status of the media - more media -> more checking -> more cpu :-(

Also running Server 1.3.1 Build 10

... but no problems wiht cpu usage mine is always on 0% with the odd spike to 1% as for content just under 4000 videos and 800 mp3`s

System Spec
Quadcore Extreme QX9650 3.00GHz
2GB 1066MHz HPC DDR2
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB
Vista Ultimate
2x Samsung SpinPoint F1 1TB 7200RPM SATA-II 32MB

I am seeing 0% to 3% when idle or connected

When I look at the task list the DivXConnected.exe program is showing mostly 0% with occasional 2 or 3% spikes.

The only reason I can think of for using more is if you looked at while it was adding new content to your library. The full scan can take a long time on a large library and the server app will report what it is doing at the bottom of the application screen.

Nope, the server was not

Nope, the server was not adding new content (it goes way higher than 10% when scanning content anyway)... I'm talking about a steady 8-10% usage when idle, i.e. no client connected, no scanning, no nothing - just the server running.

Did you try with 1.3.1 Build 10? Because for the sake of it I just downgraded to 1.2.0 Build 48, and lo and behold, CPU usage looks normal (2-3% when idle). I'll go back to 1.3.1 and report.

Yes, I am using 1.3.1.10

Have you tried exiting and re-starting the server?

FWIW, I have found which mp3

FWIW, I have found which mp3 file caused the server to crash while scanning (it plays fine in Winamp and other players, though, and the tags look good to me...). Is there a FTP I can upload the file to so you guys can take a look at it?

Anyway, I'll remove the file and do a full re-scan to see if the crash was related to the CPU usage issue.

Bug is still there...

... full re-scan done (no crash this time), and CPU usage is back to 8-10% when idle, so the CPU issue was not related to the (possibly corrupt) file and subsequent crash. This does indeed look like a bug to me. Could 30.000+ files be too much to handle for the server?

The server just finished

The server just finished scanning my music. And... bingo, CPU usage is now up to a steady 6-10% even though the scan is finished (or so it says in the main window). Removed the music folder from the server, and voila, back to a normal 0-1% CPU. Could it be related to the crash earlier while scanning, like some process did not properly end or something?

Yes I did, same problem. I

Yes I did, same problem.

I just re-installed 1.3.1.10 from scratch, properly deleting preferences, plug-ins, etc. beforehand. With no media added, the server behaves normally, i.e. 0-3% CPU when idle.

I'm currently in the process of adding all my media folder by folder to see if there's any change in CPU usage. FWIW, the server crashed while scanning my music (I have quite a lot of it, 200GB+, all in MP3 format) and had to be restarted. Still scanning as I write this...

Interesting

I've been running 1.3.1 Build 10 for about a week now and didn't notice any lag on my machine but after reading this thread I decided to peek in the task manager and lo & behold it's running roughly 6-7% of my system. And that's when the server is idle and my Connected box downstairs is shut off.

For what it's worth:
Running a Dell Pentium 4 3.0 ghz processor
3 gigs of RAM installed DDR-2 800 mhz
Windows XP Service Pack 2
GeForce 8600 GT video card

Glad to see I'm not imagining things :)

I did a few more tests and found out that the amount of CPU usage seems directly related to the amount of media added to the server:

- no media to a few dozen files --> mostly 0%, w/ a few spikes to 2-3%
- around 1,000 files --> steady 2-3% (*never* goes down to 0%)
- 30,000+ files --> steady 8-10%

I tried this on two differents machines, same results.

It doesn't seem to cause any visible lag when using the server, at least on my setup (dual-core Opteron 2.4Ghz, 2G RAM, XP SP3), but I would definitely call this a bug, as there's no reason the server should eat up CPU cycles when idle.

We will try to reproduce this issue

Thanks for the detailed info. We will try to reproduce this issue and find the root cause. CPU usage should not be affected by the amount of media.

Regarding your MP3 file crash issue, please see the end of this post:
