And now for the BIG question.....
Will the DivX Connected box be made DivX 7 compatible?
Yes, that is the plan, to eventually integrate DivX 7 and DivX Connected. Since the only DivX Connected device available right now is the D-Link DSM-330, which cannot decode h.264 natively, the initial implementation will have to be software based transcoding on the PC.
In the future, however, it is possible that decoding could be done on hardware, it will just depend on the particular device.
We are working to make software transcoding available as soon as possible, but it will not be ready at the time of DivX 7's launch, most likely.
But let me know if you have any further questions.
On a side note:
I'm using DivX 7 beta with DivX Connected through the config file.
And it works! (Yeah!)
Will there be a DivX Connected device with native h.264 decoding on the market place soon?
Since The Hauppauge announcement 10 months ago it's been terrible quite.
Will the transcoding be utilizing the native h.264 decoding offered in current GPU's?
What will the new DivX 7 profiles be?
(i'd like to make the right choices in my encodes)
What choices should i make in the multiple audio streams / subtitle front? Will you support the current .mkv options in DivX connected?
Hi schwarz
Any chance of posting a link to your config file?
I am using the latest one from Kamiwa along with Divx 7, but my mkv's no longer work :-(
I'm on server version "DivX Connected(tm) 1.3.1 Build: 10"
(Version 1.4 screws up my video framerates!)
Can somebody post the file on the forum? The link can't be downloaded anymore because it has reached the limit of 10 download (uploaded with free account)
Ok, you are asking some damn good questions here. :)

That is a very good question, that unfortunately I don't have a specific answer for right now. But I will say it's not a coincidence that as DivX 7 has gotten closer, that manufacturers are very interested in integrating that technology, which has certainly delayed some things. But we are working very hard to get some more Connected hardware out, it just always takes longer than we would like.

Hardware acceleration is on the roadmap for h.264 decoding in DivX 7 for sure, but I don't honestly know the details of how that would integrate into Connected. I'll try and find out though.

Those are being locked down as we speak. We'll have more information very, very soon on that.

Again, and I hate to sounds so vague, but we are finalizing the encoding profiles first, and then we'll work on integration into Connected. But certainly some of the basic choices demonstrated in the DivX 7 player beta should give an idea of where we're going.

Ahhh.... Can i be a Beta tester ?? :-)

Are you hinting that there will be a configuration option in the connected server? (making a GUI for the current config file?)
The current connected server could really need some extra features.
- backup database
- vacuum database
- use folder.jpg for content in the folder
- combine folders from different discs to one folder
(if name is the same)
- screensavers
- plugin management
- services management
- font (size, colour) selection
- icon (size, colour) selection
- background selection
- global sorting options
- codec selection and settings controle
- scan every minute not every 5 sec
- api support for server/database
- support streaming from capture cards
- do not create extra jpg's in content folder.
(use the database and images folder instead)
Also:
- Will the new MKV like DivX container support metadata?
if so, support metadata for video files
Oke, i told myself i wasn't going to post these long lists anymore, but here i go again. Well, maybe there are a few new idea in there you could use.
regards,
Wow, that is a great list! But I just want to say, that is really excellent feedback, and I will make sure the developers get your suggestions.
MKV certainly supports metadata. Is there a specific option you are looking for?
If you are going to use the same metadata handling as standard MKV most of my wishes will be met.
Have you thought about what name conventions to use in the embedded xml? (or just standard?)
How should the thumbnail cover art be named? (cover*.* ??)
A couple of questions then please:
Is it possible that a future firmware release on the DSM-330 could enable it to decode h.264 natively or will entirely new hardware be required?
If a future version of DivX Connected Server will be able to decode h.264, does that mean we would then not need Kamiwa's patch for .mkv files?
The DSM-330 does not decode h.264, so that is not going to change I'm afraid.
To the second question, yes, an updated Connected Server software should mean you will not need Kamiwa's patch for MKV files.
