I converted a file to DIVX format (avi) and put it on the web and used the web player to view it. It seems to take forever to buffer and when it does play, although the motion is smooth, the sound is very choppy. Any ideas?

Sound Codec ?

Which encoder/converter did you use ?

There are many different mp3-encoders out there, not all works flawless with the DivX player. But if you used the tools from DivX this should not be an issue.

I use AutoGK to convert from VIDEO_TS structures, mpeg and avi files, using lame-mp3-encoder and DivX codec with no problems.

In the other end, it could be at the playback-machine the problem is, if the source is 48Khz try lowering it to 44.1Khz, some cheap soundcard with crappy drivers tend to mess up the resampling. But this is just a long shot, I've only seen it once.

Otherwise try post a link, and we can have a look :)
