PC Client on other computers

Hi...

I'm new here so I appologize in advance for any stupid questions!!

I've installed DivX Connected Server on my HTPC ( 1.5 Beta ). The PC Client works well on the HTPC, but I'm having a hard time using the PC Client on another computer and having it connect to the Connected Server on my HTPC.

Is the PC Client meant to run alone on multiple PC's that dont have the Server installed on it? Is it possible to just install the PC Client instead of having to install both? I tried just installing the client but it seems thats not possible.

I tried searching the forum but couldn't seem to find any answers to the questions I have. I appreciate any help you can give a noob! :)

The PC client in server 1.5 only connects to the local PC

The reason it is much faster, is that it does not require the server to encode the menus into a DivX stream before before sending it to the client to decode. That is a huge amount of overhead when both are on the same PC.

You can do one of two things to access content from a different PC. I would recommend sharing the folders on the other PC and then adding them to be monitored by the PC with 1.5 server and client. This will give you the best performance.

Your other option is the use the DCMP.exe client from the SDK which can connect to another server. It is available here: http://labs.divx.com/files/ServerPluginsSDK.exe

sharing folders served by connected

That answers another question I had. I've picked up a NAS (which I haven't populated yet), and I was wondering how that would factor in. What you recommend is essentially the same as a NAS.

I asked this question too, but I don't think I got an answer.

I think what we're seeing with the Beta is that they ship 'Connected PC' with the Connected Server Beta 1.5 which is a client that connects directly to the Connected Server, perhaps through shared memory or a named pipe instead of through TCP/IP. It's quite a bit faster than the other client, that's why I suspect it connects differently.

This client also doesn't appear to be configurable.

But in the Connected Server SDK there's a (1.4) 'Connected PC Client' which is much more configurable, including the ability to configure it to connect to other servers. On that client you can hit the right-hand side control key on your keyboard and it'll bring up a configuration menu like on the DSM-330 and there you can choose an alternative server.

That's probably the one you need to use on your HTPC.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing myself, but I'm wondering what a good solution for a remote control would be. I have a remote control on the video capture card that I put in my HTPC, but I'm not sure if I can reprogram it to work with Connected, that's a project in itself!
