I have to very clean installs of RC1 and 7077. I uninstalled hali splitter rebooted and then installed the Divx mkv application. Media player on both PC's will not play any type of mkv file. Am I missing a step?

Is there any chance that you are running the 64-bit version of Media Player? This preview only runs with the 32-bit versions (which should be the default).
Are the files on your local drive, a network share, a temporary location? It's hard to tell what might be wrong without more detailed information.
You could try rendering a file using TopoEdit from the Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008, it installs under "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDK\Windows\v6.1\bin". If it fails to render in TopoEdit we can be sure something went wrong.
No video for MKV file on Windows 7 Build 7000
In regards to the initial post of MKV's not playing, I had the same issue originally on build 7000. The funny thing is, my xbox 360 extender could play a 720 h264 ac3 file. The next thing I did to try to remedy the issue is install the haali splitter. Doing so allowed the file to play with audio, but no video. I hope that helps.
