Updated, when last I spoke of this I failed to mention a few things, so after trying all sorts of codecs and all the new iterations of DIVX (connected,7,MKV)I couldn't explain how exactly it all came together to work, but it did, it was complex and messy. For example after getting each software component installed I would rush downstairs to see if the PS3 was HD streaming, like 15 trips! I tried all sorts of end-a-rounds and for no good reason it started working, I believe now i know why. WMP in 7100 was the culprit as it constantly was trying to update the libraries and would crash during the indexing. When it would stabilize and I could stream video but if I went to music in the PS3 to stream a song it would crash WMP instantly, big clue there, ouch! This time with the new build WMP12 itself has improved(has the same build number 7231)so we may now see at least this is closer to being easier for the masses.

Ps3 streaming install guideline: No hassle install

W7 build 7231 fresh install

ATI W7 driver latest

CCCP codec pack

Shark007 codec pack(not sure if needed this time but...)

DivXTechPreviewMKVOnWin7

Setup libraries in WMP12

in WMP12>Tools>Options>Devices>Advanced> unchecked allow video files to convert in background.

also WMP12>Tools>Options>Privacy unchecked update music files by retrieving info from the internet, try this if it won't stop updating.

For me one trip downstairs and HD streaming first try.

Thanks to all who helped in getting the info to me, I can't recall where I gleaned it all from.

WOW how confusing

Okay, all this coding is making me very dizzy!!! Can someone help me in English on how to stream divx and MKV files from windows 7 x64 bit to PS3??? I managed registering my product from my PS3 to my Divx account... but no one has placed a video tutorial on how to stream a movie there after.... How confusing for NORMAL individuals who don't understand a word of pnp, 7321`1 or whatever the heck!!!! Thanks or any help... I'm getting fustrated on buying products and not being able to work it well. I also have a xbox 360 if this is too complicated, however, my PS3 is connected to our HD TV, which would make watching movies a whole lot better!

Setup Video

There's a link to the setup video pinned to the top of the forum page:
http://labs.divx.com/node/14831

It's mainly aimed at setting up the Xbox 360, since that really is the highest quality MKV playback you'll get with this Tech Preview.

If you want to stream them to your PS3, you'll have to enable media sharing of your library:

The Playstation 3 will get the videos as transcoded MPEG-2, which means they won't be original quality, but at least they'll make it to your TV. Let us know if you have more questions.

MKV working on ps3

It's working for me the MKV files are streamed to the PS3 as MPEG-2 over UPnP. But the quality is pretty bad.

Transcoding

Yeah, this is due to transoding. Before we released the Tech Preview, the MKVs were not available to the PS3 via UPnP, but there's not really anything we can do about the transcoding yet.

The reason why the Xbox 360 doesn't transcode is it's using Windows Media Center Extender, which is not available on the PlayStation 3.

"I tried getting it to work

"I tried getting it to work on the 360 but the image quality was butt ugly"

I've been trying to explain to the DivX team that the Release Candidate of Windows 7 is (at least in some situations) transcoding videos when sending them to Extenders, which is a very serious problem. They don't seem to believe me (yet), so thank you for reporting this.

Are you using the XBox wirelessly? Is the host computer also wireless?

All wired, yeah the issue is

All wired, yeah the issue is transcoding, like the "Play to extender" is an awful solution ATM. The PS3 is straight streaming, where as the host computer in conjunction with the 360 is mucking up the process...again the PS3 is working excellent(1080p!)just needs subs and multiple audio streams. Oh and no answer to my initial questions?

PS3 Question

Hey, need some clarification here.. I am trying to understand if this Tech Preview can help me do this:

Current Setup: I convert my mkvs to vob using mkv2vob (which doesn't transcode, just switches the container). Then I use Tversity or WMP in Windows 7 to natively stream to PS3 -- no transcoding while streaming. Drawback is, I have to run mkv2vob on every mkv file i have and I don't delete the original mkv -- which means I end up with 2 copies of the same movie.

I am sure you have used the above method before. My question is, after installing Tech Preview, can I stream my mkvs to PS3 without transcoding? If yes, great! if not, what is the advantage of Tech Preview over let's say streaming mkvs with TVersity with transcoding enabled? Does it use hardware acceleration (I have NVidia 8800GT)?

Thanks!

MKV for PS3

Using this Tech Preview _will_ transcode your MKV files to the PS3 as MPEG-2 over UPnP.

Why use this instead of PS3

Why use this instead of PS3 Media Server then which does an absolutely fine job as it is of converting MKV on the fly. Isn't that all this is doing anyway?

Also when I tried this with the 360, WMP12's indexing was off the charts and WMC would crash on the 360 as the indexing was hitting about 75% of CPU on my 64 Bit Quad Core tower!

DivX 7 on PS3

Did you mean the question about DivX certification for the PS3 to play MKV directly? We don't have a date/answer to that. That's something that's up to Sony and I don't have the information to say whether or not that's something they're working on (although, I should hope so). As a PS3 customer, bug them about it as much as you can on their forums, etc., so they know it's a feature people are demanding. We, of course, would love to have them be DivX Plus HD certified. BTW, "DivX Plus HD" is the term that'll be used for devices that we certify to play H.264/MKV. You can find out more about our certification levels here:

Yes that is what i was

Yes that is what i was referring to, I will bother them about it, although I can't imagine that they would pass up the next feature version of something they already have committed to...we'll see thx

We believe you :)

There may have been some confusion initially but we believe you. I promise. :) Unfortunately we don't have any V2 Extenders to test against other than our Xbox 360.

Do you know what format it is transcoding the video/audio into? Any more detailed technical information would be very helpful.

Let me check on the 360

Let me check on the 360 solution again, as I have the 7231 build of W7 just installed and some of the buggy stuff with the ps3 media sharing with WM12 seems to have improved. Soo maybe the 360 will perform better now. I'm going to update my install method for the PS3 at the top of this thread for this build as it went very smoothly compared to 7100.

:) Sorry if I sounded

:) Sorry if I sounded snippy. In the post "Extenders on RC (build 7100) - transcoding?!?" I have provided some greater technical detail, as well as two links that demonstrate that this problem can occur on the Xbox 360 as well. If you can tell me how to find out what format it is transcoding to, I'd be happy to check for you - same goes for any other information that I can provide you with. This needs to get sorted out, it's nuts.
