I dont seem to be able to find the supported OSes for Divx connected - FINALLY bought a DSM300 on the recommendation of a colleague who is delighted with his.

So far I have installed the original version of Divx connected which came with the install disk, and upgraded on to 1.5 as recommended. Ive tried the software on three different machines so far - a P4 2.8 which I use as a "play" box on my network - my sbs 2003 server (well, its on all the time, so why not?) and finally in desperation a newly built dual core 2.5ghz with a copy of xp64 from my action pack. The systems seem to be stable on the original install and as soon as I upgrade them to 1.5, I will get a brief increase in menu speed then the whole thing goes legs-in-the-air! (haven't started taking crash dumps yet until I sort out the OS question)

Couple questions here - first and most obvious - what Operating Systems are supported for Divx connected? - specifically is xp64 and is SBS2003?

Second - Im aware that the recommendation for homeplug is that one uses the 200mhz systems rather than the 85s - although all my divx collection is streaming very well from the Acer NAS box I store it on (when the server is working). What is the received wisdom and could this be causing my problems?

This looks like a moan, but its not - I very much want to get the system working and am prepared to put some time into it. I AM an engineer and appreciate the value of peer support - its why Im here!

XP64 working here

FWIW, I've been using version 1.5 of the DivX Connected server on XP64 SP2 for months with no major problems (a few crashes while scanning here and there, but nothing I didn't already experience on 32-bit XP). It runs on a Core 2 Duo 6600, 4GB RAM, with a low-end Geforce 8400 GS, connected to a DSM-330 with the latest firmware.

The "Connected PC" software client is pretty unstable, though, but I doubt that has anything to do with the OS being XP64.

I suspect your problem is linked to faulty hardware and/or badly installed drivers rather than the OS.

XP 32

Hi chrisalis,

I'm using DixConnected on 32-bit Windows XP and it's running fine. I started to use 85 Mbit/s Homeplug Devices to connect my PC to DSM 330. The effiective transmission rate was about 54 Mbit/s. Unfortunatly the DSM 330 had a lot of problems finding the server. As far as I could evaluate there was an issue transmitting multicastframes. If the server was found streaming was running fine, even with HD content. I switched to 200 Mbit/s Homeplug devices (explicit mentioned that multicast frame are supported) and now everything is running fine. The only "anoying" thing is that Divx Connetced is using Open GL and can't be run as a service (support told me that only logged on users can use the Open GL acceleration of the graphics card).

Best regards
Carsten

Partial solution - maybe?

Hi Carsten - thanks for the input - as a result of which I am TRYING a combination of other things to get this feller working!

One thing that HAS come up is a REAL problem with Divxconnectedservice when I'm running version 1.5 of the software - it CONSISTENTLY crashes on four different machines - I havent YET found a culprit for the cause, but I am working on it. Is anyone else having problems ONLY with version 1.5 of the software? - I havent seen any comments

One solution I have found for the problem of running on 64 bit systems is to run a copy of XP Pro (32 bit) on a Virtual machine under xp64 - this is sweet so far (apart from the three restarts for MS updates - forgot to switch it off- aaargh!). NO problem with slow menus/not finding server/crashes etc - BUT ONLY UNDER SOFTWARE VERSION 1.00.

OpenGL is another problem I have encountered, but so far been unable to solve. Under the XP64 machine I have a Radeon X300 (I'm not a gamer - can you tell?) with all the latest drivers, and still the system tells me that OpenGL is not supported.

I have to say so far that, although I am pleased with the system when it works, I can't say I will be keeping it unless I can get a MUCH more flawless interface with the domestic system - I have a wife and son, both of who are reasonably savvy with boxes, but neither of who would put up with this sort of fiddling for more than a week - and frankly, I dont see why they should have to!

I'm surprised that there is so much "slack" in a system that has been up for quite a while in computer terms. Playback was better and more reliable under my old system (a box sat next to the TV). I'll keep trying and keep reading - for now.

working hard sir? - oh YES! - working VERY hard.....

Same problem - I give up!

I too am having this problem and have had nothing but problems with Connected since I decided to start the experiment over a year ago. The only thing that kept me going for this long was the ability to write my own plug-ins, which was fun for a while. However I have to say the general stability of the system running DivX Connected standard software has been poor at best over this period and appears to be getting worse rather than better.

I like the idea of the DLink DSM330 hardware but unless I find a way of using it via better written server side software soon it is going on eBay.

Not happy.
