MKV files stop right away on 360 mce extender
Windows 7 RC fresh install, Divx Labs tech preview isntalled (5-13-09 build). Wired network. Star Trek Trailer 720p MKV file downloaded from your test site plays fine, but the Elephants Dream 1080p file stops after 30 seconds of playback. My TV just goes blank. No playback controls work at that point (I tried to press pause in case it needed to buffer or something). I have 2 other MKV files I have tried (not downloaded from divx site). It is 1080p also stops after 30 seconds.
Could this be a problem with transcoding in Windows? On the Star Trek trailer my CPU level does not go above 15%. And during the 30 seconds I get of Elephants Dream CPU is 10%.
I also have Haali splitter installed and AC3Filter Full version installed. All software referenced was freshly downloaded and installed today.
Any suggestions on how to remedy?
Are there any DivX representatives reading these forums? The lack of feedback is a bit worrying ...
I'm getting a few videos that play for 5sec then freeze. And then some that work just fine.
Guys,
I see posts like "with AC3Filter I solved the issue". AC3Filter starts for me only during local playback at the PC. Via Windows Media Center from XBOX360 -when I start the MKV- I just do not see AC3Filter to be triggered ... no icon neither at the systray.
I have fresh install from everything, x64 ultimate Win7. What is wrong here. All I (we) need here to make AC3Filter to do the on-the-fly conversion even when I start the movie (MKV) from WMC via XBOX360.
.ft.
Is this still an unresolved issue? I'm have the exact same problem. Video freezes as soon as front speaker get used (when someone speaks)
win 7 ultimate
2gb ram
4800+ AMD 939 cpu
Same issue - when center channel audio is used the whole to the 360 stream hangs... I's watching the hangover and just at the start when the phone rings, it freezes. Ac3 5.1 audio w/ 1080p h264 vid
aieyahhh!
Hey Guys,
I'm having the same problem too. I'm not sure what causes it, because some DTS files do play (Ice.Age.Dawn.of.the.Dinosaurs.2009.Blu-Ray.720p.x264.DTS.PRoDJi.mkv) and others (The.Proposal.2009.720p.BluRay.DTS.x264-EbP.mkv) just stop after aprox. 20secs.
When opening the files on my pc everything works like a charm...
I only have the latest preview version installed, and ac3filter to make the DTS sound work.
Is there any solution yet?
I have been having this issue as well. All other formats appear to work very well, but every MKV with 6 channel AC3 at 640kbps appears to hang as soon as the center channel is used - it is almost always as a main character starts to speak some dialogue. If the clip does not have any dialog, playback seems to run for many minutes before hitting a point where it will eventually hang.
Exact the same problem here...
It looks like it always happpens when voice is going to be heard. Action scenes are working always fine until someone is starting to talk...
Maybe a frequency issue in the Preview. Got the latest release installed (11-03-2009).
Edit: Connected via Gigabit cable - changings in settings (networkcard, x360, pc) doesnt help.
Edit2: Maybe it depends on your PC hardware...maybe someone else with the same problem can post this few things, too.
Win7 Prof x64
Core2Quad 3Ghz
Geforce GT8800
enable flow control on your NIC... worked wonders for me when streaming to the Xbox
Have tried all suggested settings in these forums, no change in behaviour. Happens on *almost* all 640kbps AC3 mkv (720p/1080p), when the front speaker is to be put in use. The video freezes completely. but I can still poke around the interface with no issues.
CPU, memory, network - all numbers still good.
Tried to download two movies from a web site to test.
These does not work properly, and stutter/freeze when dialogue comes up.
17.Again.720p.BluRay.x264-REFiNED
The.Matrix.1999.1080p.BluRay.MULTiSUBS.iNT.x264-GRiMRPR
I have a very simular problem, gut feeling says it's likely the same even though the ways to get it to show seem different.
Clean Windows 7 box with 2 TV cards, Tech mkvwin7 preview, AC3 filter. Xbox 360 as Extender. Only things installed.
For me, it has so far been isolated to 640kbps AC3 encoded mkv files, but not all. I have no problems playing any mkv encoded with 1500kbps DTS though.
Resolution of the movie file does not matter. Have tried both 720p and 1080p with 640kbps AC3. CPU, disk, IO, network are all moderate in usage, no sign of anything being to weak to handle this.
(Box handled these mkv files *perfectly* at low cpu/io usage when in Vista and relevant codecs installed.)
This only seem to happen when the front channel is to be put in use, ie when somebody is speaking. Music in front/back channels is fine, but audio through front channel kills the stream and freezes it.
Fast forwarding to a section with alot of music and no talk makes the stream go on, until the front channel is to be put in use again. Frozen!
I can still navigate through the media center interface when this happens, no problems or slowdowns.
Edit: MediaInfo details for one 640kbps AC3 that I just found that works, and 2 (720p and 1080p) that does not work.
MediaInfo details from the one 640kbps working mkv:

Tried playing the same files from the console of the Win7 machine, within the Media Center interface, works like a charm. No hickups or anything indicating any issues.
Moving back to the living room and the Xbox 360 Extender, that very same file freezes in the same locations as before.
yeah the same exact thing happens to me, but the rare MKV will play normally.
using the MCE on xbox 360
windows 7 build 7100
2.0ghz dual-core
4gb ram
Same thing on my converted BR w/flac audio. Both VC1 and H.264 video types. Plays for a few seconds and then it goes black. Am able to get back to the main menu so it isn't that the extender software has fully locked up. Tried coverting some DVD files to mkv and they played ok with an occassional non reproducable hickups. So it would seem to point to a buffer issue on high bitrate content or potentially just high resolution files as the bunny video isn't the same bitrate as BR's typically are.
Hardwired 100mb connection to the xbox. PC running Win7 Ultimate RTM. Tried videos stored on home server and on local pc drive with same result.
I am having the exact same issue.
We will have to check it out with that clip. I would advise you to try reinstalling the Tech Preview after removing the Haali splitter just to be sure that isn't causing a conflict. Using our solution Windows 7 won't do any transcoding for MKV/H.264 files.
More info on my same situation. The movies only play for about 5 seconds on my 360, then the 360 just goes black screen. Pressing 'B' returns back to media extender menu, but playing another file does the same thing. Sound and video play fine until the blackout.
I tried the HD buckyBunny download and the 2012 HD download, along with some other HD content from various places on the net.. same result.
Edit: When i play these files in windows media player, my cpu never spikes over 40%ish.. when playing in windows media center, my cpu usage floats about 90%ish with lots of 100% spikes.
Dual Core Pentium D 3ghz, Nvidia 7900gs, 2 gig ram
I think there may be something going on in the software decoder for H.264 in Media Center on your machine. The 7900GS only has very rudimentary support for H.264 acceleration. It seems odd that WMP only uses 40% of your CPU and WMC uses 90%. Have you thought about trying a newer build of Windows 7? Have you installed the latest nVidia video card drivers for Windows 7?
I will have to try the 360 with these clips too.
Also, would the computer I am feeding the file to the 360 extender make a difference? I am using an older C2D laptop, intel gma 950 graphics, 2gb ram, wired 100mbs ethernet connection.
Any progress on resolving this issue or tips to try and work around it would be much appreciated.
The exact same thing happens to me. Seems to happen to DTS only audio files. Fresh RC7100 install, divx labs install, and ac3filter.
Heres a mediainfo dump of a problematic MKV file:
EDIT: My 360 is set for Dolby Digital Audio and 1080i output in the dashboard settings tab.

I have the same issue using the VAC3ACM wrapper or AC3Filter_1.6b with the tech preview. Random MKV files with AC3 audio...some work perfectly, some will stop about 30 seconds in. I can stop, do a forward skip with the 360 remote, it will play a couple more seconds and stop again.
Of course, I can convert the files to VOB/MPEG using MKV2VOB but that kind of negates the reason for doing all of this in the first place. Would love to leave MKV files alone and just have them WORK!
I am having the exact same issue. All my movies are mkv AC3 audio. The only thing I have installed on my machine is the Tech Preview and AC3 Filter.
Certain movies play fine, others free up like you mentioned. And I also have bene using mkv2vob, and just remuxing them to m2ts and they work fine.

If you are remuxing them to a .m2ts then it is windows 7 that is doing it's thing in moving them to the extenders and the divx preview shouldn't be coming into play.
Interesting to hear you guys are having the issues as well with different audio files as I thought it might be the flak audio on my movie only BR mkv files that was causing the issue.
It doesn't appear to be a bitrate thing only as I can skip around, even after it freezes and on files like '300' it starts playing immediately for about 6 seconds then freezes again. No buffering needed.(do something like hit 10 and Play on your remote and you'll jump to 10 mins into the movie)
*edit - uninstalled everything and I'm not sure what could be causing it as just installing divx doesn't let the files be recognized at all if they have Flac audio (no thumbnails either). Installing madflac doesn't do anything. Shark Pack (ffdshow) was what seemed to be enabling playback.
Old topic, but figured I would share what I found. After having this problem and reading a bunch of ideas but none really found any reasons.
I kept seeing things such as "as soon as they start talking"....
using mediainfo, I started looking at the files that wouldnt play and seeing what they shared. What all of them had was multiple text streams (subtitles).
Using mkvmerge I opened up these files, took out the subtitles, remuxed quick and BAM, the files work just fine.
Has there been any update to this? I just stumbled across this problem with a certain MKV file. Locked up my 360 but plays fine on my WD LIVE. After completely reloading my HTPC from scratch (needed to anyway - it had been over a year and had extra hardware to install), found the problem wasn't solved - then found this forum.
It is definitely an issue with having multiple subtitles in the file. Has anyone found an alternative to removing the subs? I'd just hate to have to do this EVERY TIME there's a MKV with subs. Oh - and I don't think it's a DIVX problem either, as I didn't even have DIVX installed - only Shark007's codecs (both 32/64 - running Win7Ult64). Any Ideas??
I just tried what was stated above and it now works fine.. removed the subtitle files and the movie plays fine.. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS DIVX!!
Installed Codecs and all ok played locally on the HTPC but soon as I play through Xbox it becomes choppy, happens with all MKV's.

Still having the same issue as I had 10 months ago - most mkv files downloaded are unplayable on the extender. 720p TV releases seem to work fine (IMMERSE excepted) - but very few in regards to movies.
I've started to think that this might have something to do with audio header compression, or atleast audio header format/contents, because I have the EXACT same issue when playing any of the last 3 IMMERSE 720p releases of Warehouse 13 on the Media Center Extender - but it works great on the console itself.
(( One might debate wether this should be solved by Microsoft with a firmware upgrade on the Xbox 360 or if DivX could do something with their software to ensure the audio gets presented properly to the Xbox 360 - but I would for sure prefer the DivX solution as I don't have much hopes for Microsoft bothering with this problem. ))
