x264 MKV encoded video. Transcoding fine but no subtitles ???
Hi,
I recently bought a dsm 330, and I am very satisfied by this little wonder.
However I have a big problem when it comes to MKV with videos that are x264 encoded in an MKV container. Transcoding is fine for me, I have a powerfull computer so this ain't a problem at all.
However I can't find a way to make subtitles works this way, doesn't matter if subtitles are muxed inside the mkv container or appart from the mkv as a standalone .srt file, it just doesn't work !
Is there a way to make subtitles works with transcoded on the fly videos, or does they just work with divx Videos (I made a test with a divx video and subtitles as a standalone .srt and works just fine).
So what about it ? This is a big pain actually because I have a lot of x264 MKV videos with subtitles (most of my videos) and in that case I have to watch them on my computer and it pieces me off :(
Thanks a lot for your answer !
I think the DivX team must be taking a little holiday at the moment (sure I can't blame them...!) as haven't seen Dan's presence on the forums for a while now.
However regardless, the difficulty is that DivX no longer really comment on users seeking or proposing additional functionality anymore. In early 2008, it was the complete opposite but support now seems to be limited to bug fixes. Just check the topics on the forums DivX reply to. Its disappointing as I see ourselves as loyal and enthusiastic users who could make a significant contribution to the development of this product... But that's a rant for another day.
Anyhow, you are right, subtitles support for MKV is essential (this is basic functionality people!). And furthermore, you could also add support for MKV files with DTS Audio (Kamiwa's workaround resolves this but why not simply integrate it in the server).
Thanks for your answer fkm !
That confirmed what I was thinking ... At least I know I'm not crazy :p
So the only option *for now only...let's cross fingers* is to either reencode video as DivX7 with HD profile (but lonnnng time process) or to incrust subtitles on video as you suggest (and I think I'll go rather this way even if I'm not a big fan as well).
btw I'm interested to know (as a developper)if within the API for developping plugins (haven't taken a look yet) there are some functions which expose onscreen rendering possibilities over a video running on the box. I just got the box so I have tried a few plugins but have seen none with onvideo rendering functionality, so I guess it's not possible.
But if possible there should be a way to add this functionality as a plugin.

Whether muxed or not, unfortunately the 330 doesn't seem to be capable at this point in time of displaying subtitles with MKV playback.
Though the MKV files are transcoded, I don't see why subtitles can't be rendered onscreen like for AVI's. Maybe that's something to add to the 330 wishlist but seeing as development looks to have finished, I wouldn't hold your breath.
Not a fan of doing it but the only suggestion is to embed the subtitle into the x264 file.
Hi.
Aside of the 330 issue and persons for whom English is not their first language, there are numerous movies out there which, irrespective of the dialogue language, use forced subtitles to underpin scenes which contain a dialogue in an alternative language, like the Chinese sequence from the Day The Earth Stood Still (2008) or various parts from the Mummy films; and frankly I'd rather not need to learn Klingon if ya get my point.
I must agree with the previous post, subtitles are basic functionality.
Regards to all.
My collection has foreign films with original audio embedded with English subtitles.
Frustrating but still hoping somebody checks the forum from the dev team.

Could it be possible to get an official response on this topic please ?
Or is it just that you don't care for international users who needs subtitles whereas english speaking people don't need them to watch x264 MKV encoded videos and can fully enjoy the box ...
I'm sorry I may not see all the technical problems involved in adding subtitle support on transcoded content but would like to have at least an answer.
Thanks !
