CES 2010 - DivX Plus HD Devices Are Here!

Bookmark and Share

So the cat is out of the bag, and we're excited to announce that you will have several options out there to watch your DivX Plus™ HD (MKV/H.264/AAC) files from devices in your living room. In case you didn't get the details from the various press releases and tech blog coverage, let me sum it up for you.

DivX Plus HD devices are here! That's right, you can watch those high-definition, surround-sound MKV videos in DivX Plus format. Also, DivX Plus HD certification means you still play any of your existing DivX files (.divx/.avi), or videos you have purchased from any of our Hollywood content partners.

DivX Plus HD support was announced by Philips, to debut in a line of their Blu-ray players. Also, Seagate has announced plans for DivX Plus HD certification for their FreeAgent Theater+™ HD media player.

And then there's all the great buzz around DivX TV, an exciting Internet streaming platform embedded directly in future devices, which provides a whole array of possible DivX Plus HD device candidates.

We've long been preparing for this moment, by launching DivX 7 with DivX Plus HD support early last year, including DivX Player with MKV playback support and H.264/MKV video creation with DivX Converter. We released free components to enable MKV playback on Windows 7 in our DivX Plus Tech Preview of MKV on Windows 7, unleashing DivX Plus HD files on Windows Media Center, the Xbox 360, and transcoded streaming to the PlayStation 3. We're providing free H.264 and AAC reference tools and launched a DivX Developer Portal to help developers create tools that output files in this stunning and efficient format. And most recently, we updated our DivX Plus Web Player to support playback of DivX Plus HD files from web sites right through your web browser.

We've got much more planned, but thought we'd provide a recap all the way up to these latest CES announcements (check out the CES blog) to prepare you for an ever improving media experience. Feel free to post comments and questions and we'll respond the best we can.

Good news and no news

I have two Philips stand alone DVD players that are Ultra-Certified.

Will Divx be working with Philips to upgrade the drivers for the existing Philips, Ultra-certified DVD (Divx) players ??

I truly hope that Divx rewards their long time customers, that have been using stand alone DVD players that are Divx compliant for many years, and help Philips to create and distribute a firmware that would allow for Divx 7 support.
Could it possibly be that customer loyalty is something meaningful for Divx??

I personally am NOT going to purchase a stand alone DVD player that support blu-ray, not now and hopefully, not ever. With the economy in the U.S. unbelievably horrific, I don't think people are in the mood to bi hijacked in purchasing new players, because there isn't the availability of new Divx Firmware.
